Project Description:
This porch was part of the original whole house renovation project that we designed for our client four years ago. For a variety of reasons, we were not able to include the work as part of that original project, but the client knew it was just a matter of time. They knew the porch would add the architectural dimension and character that the house really needed. They also knew that it would become an integral gathering space for their family, friends, and neighbors.
In keeping with their “authentically relaxed” style, we incorporated a design aesthetic of mixing real antique barn posts and weathered siding with low maintenance TimberTech decking, Boral trims, and a standing seam metal roof. The client’s also added a super comfy swinging bed and cushioned wicker furniture so that all of their gatherings could be comfortable. To ensure maximum use through the seasons, we added an in-ceiling, infrared heater for those cool fall evenings and a ceiling fan for those hot summer days.
Project Cost: $60,000 – $85,000

Green/Science-based Solutions:
Various green and science-based materials and techniques were used on this project.
- Using antique barn materials is super green and recycling materials for another 100 years
- “Helical Piles” were used which are green steel posts we screwed into the ground to build the structure on top of. Much more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly than digging holes and pouring concrete.
- We used pressure-treated framing for the deck structure and added G-Tape (the black tape) on the tops of that framing which blocks water from deteriorating the framing and extends the life expectancy to 50+ years.
- The standing metal seam roof should have a life of 50+ years.
- The decking material and Boral Trims are also 50+ year products.
- We used LED ceiling lights and an Energy Star rated ceiling fan.
